The OPEN Meter project was established to specify a comprehensive set of open and public standards for AMI, supporting electricity, gas, water and heat metering, based on agreement by relevant stakeholders in this area, and taking into account the real conditions of the utility networks so as to allow for full implementation. The scope of the project is to address knowledge gaps in the adoption of open-standards for smart multi-metering equipment and all relevant aspects, including regulatory environments, smart metering functions, communication media, protocols, and data formats.
CURRENT Group is leading significant components of the Open Meter Initiative associated with identifying key knowledge and technology gaps in state-of-the art Smart Grid technologies. Areas of evaluation include protocols for wired, power line carrier and wireless communication media, as well as application data models and system architectures. The technologies most suitable for the purposes of AMI will be selected.
